Mount Vernon’s 12-Acre Field transforms into a battleground as Continentals, British, and Hessians set up camps and conducted military drills and tactical demonstrations.

The 23rd was well represented with 13 Fusiliers attending. Captain Horsfall’s Company set up camp on Friday evening. Kitchen provided by Pvt. Bob Clarke. Throughout the night we endured a heavy rain. Spirits were strengthened the next morning with a breakfast and some drill. Spectator interactions and demonstrations were also conducted for the crowd.

For the first time in memory, the British outnumbered the Continentals maybe 2-1. A grand showing for the Crown forces.

A great effort was put forth to rout the enemy on multiple occasions. Two main tactical demonstrations took place at 11:00am and 3:00pm on the 12-acre field. The King’s men successfully ran those rebels off and captured a good number of them after the first battle. The second battle was fierce and the Doodle’s came back in force and took the field.

The evening ended with dancing and music on the Upper Garden. Several Fusiliers took the opportunity to tour George Washington’s home. Many members of the company gathered at the tavern in the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant for refreshment.

The second morning the weather caused the troops to break camp and head for home. The immediate hostilities had ceased.
