Another great turnout for the Southern Company at our annual Camden event. The weekend started Friday evening with our End of Campaign dinner at the Tavern in Historic Camden in conjunction with the Camden BBQ festival.

Thank you to everyone who attended and for those who brought side dishes to share – everything was delicious. There was singing, a recap of 2024, and Company presentations – a special thanks to Captain Alex for running the program.

Promotions announced:

  • Mike Lung from L/Sjt to Sjt
  • Denis Messier from brevet L/Cpl to L/Cpl.
  • Monty Dixon and Greg Brunson from Rct. to Pvt.

Awards presented:

  • Denis Messier and Nolin Jones—Campaign Award
  • Mike Lung—Pride Award
  • Special Recognition—Richard Coyle and Bob Clarke

The overall event attendance by reenactors was at record numbers since it was a BAR and British Brigade event. We also brought our Regimental Colours for the first time in over 10 years – all thanks to Tim’s relentless efforts!!! At Camden it was appropriate since Sjt Roger Lamb actually carried them in the battle.

The reenactment saw two battles on Saturday. Gibbs Plantation—we attacked a redoubt and Waxhaws—British infantry supported Cavalry. Sunday saw us again take the field against the Americans. We brigaded with the 7th Fusiliers and were on the right flank of the British Army for the historic Battle of Camden where the 23rd turned the left flank of the rebel army and put them to flight. Also since we were on the left of the 7th Fusiliers in our battalion we were in direct LOS of the crowd in every battle. We were very impressive; so I was told by several spectators. Our lad’s dedication, hard practice and appearance made the 23rd stand out among the rest of the redcoats.

And once again many thanks to The Hughes’ for the most excellent tavern, food and support they provided. Scotch eggs, little corn fritters and sausage/ sweet raisin finger food was delicious. Hope they join us again and again in 2025.
