Heralded as likely the last time a rev war event would be held at this historic location, an impressive number of British, Hessian and Continentals showed up for this semi-tactical; but, also public focused event. The 23rd was part of the 1st battalion consisting of British regulars (7th, 23rd, 33rd, 64th, 71st, and Guards) along with the NC Volunteers. The 2nd battalion was a mixed bag of regulars, Royal Marines, Hessians and provincial units. Additionally, there was a Light battalion of light infantry units, many Jaegers and some cavalry.
The area was an immense tract of land easily accommodating two camps widely separated, complete with a deep trench redoubt and embankments overlooking the rebel camp. The day’s activities included companies dispatched for picket duty, building defensive barriers, and skirmishing with rebels followed by the big battle on a vast field in front of a huge crowd. It was non-stop action for the 23rd as we were engaged in all these activities.
We again had the pleasure of having a tavern sponsored by Kathy and Allen Hughes. Food and drink were plentiful as was a great place to come back to from field duties and battle to rest and recuperate. Thanks again to Kathy and Allen.
The 23rd was led this weekend by Lieut. Shane Reilly and Sjt. Eric Spaar. The British army had the pleasure of having our RDM Joe Siegel beating commands on the drum as the army DM. Both Alex Ivanchishin and Jack Pritchard fielded as rank and file for this event and got a hearty workout to say the least.
After battle and some rest on Saturday, the 23rd faithful went out to dinner at a pub down by the river and had a grand ole’ time. Sunday was an abbreviated day consisting of church service followed by resumption of tactical actions and battle right after lunch. Weather was very hot and humid on Saturday followed by overcast and cooler temps on Sunday. Overall, great event, great location, decent turnout of our lads and several civilian followers. We also had our newest recruit, Willian (Bill) Watson attend who was fully kitted out and drilled. He gave a very enthusiastic and solid performance throughout.
