On the 14th and 15th of November, Lieut. Shane Reilly and Pvt. Alexander Reilly joined Grenadiers from His Majesty’s 14th Regt. of Foot under the command of Capt. James Carver supporting the Royal authority of Lord Dunmore. Troops from the 80th RoF, Hessian Jaegers, and a couple of Royal Artillery pieces rounded out our force. On both days rebel militia from the area near Kemp’s Landing attempted to impede our operations; but after emerging from some woods, were easily dispersed with a couple of crisp volleys and fled almost instantly as our fixed bayonets glistened in the autumn sunlight. On Sunday, following their final show of disobedience, the less then fleet footed vandals became prisoners. Lieut. Reilly apprehended one at bayonet point and escorted them to his Lordship, who benevolently offered them freedom in exchange for taking a loyalty oath. The intelligent ones that swore before Lord Dunmore returned home that afternoon. Those who resisted were sent to languish in a prison and reflect on their transgressions. Overall, the force performed well and are a tribute to His Majesty’s Arms. Lieut. and Pvt. Reilly carried themselves in a soldierly disposition and performed honorably as was expected from Grenadiers in the 23rd RoF.
