245th British Occupation of Hillsborough: 2026

As part of the Hillsborough’s annual Revolutionary War Day, the 23rd reenact the British occupation of the town that occurred in February 19-26, 1781.  This educational event is a great opportunity to interact with and educate the public and drill.

Thinking the south would be more receptive to the fight against the rebellion, on February 20, 1781, General Cornwallis issued a proclamation from Hillsborough, which read in part:

“…rescue His faithfull & loyal Subjects from the cruel Tyranny under which they have groaned for several Years” and “to invite all such loyal & faithfull Subjects to repair without loss of time with their Arms & ten days Provisions to the Royal Standard now erected at Hillsborough, where they will meet with the most friendly reception, and I do hereby assure them that I am ready to concur with them in effectual Measures for suppressing the Remains of Rebellion in this Province & for the reestablishment of good Order & constitutional Government.”
